Capacitance
ELECTRODE CAPACITANCE - Ce

A quartz plate with electrodes placed on the two sides is a capacitor with quartz as a dielectric.

HOLDER CAPACITANCE - Ch

The metal holder and leads act as a capacitor with air as the dielectric.

SHUNT CAPACITANCE - Co

Shunt capacitance, Co, is the parallel equivalent or sum of the capacitance of the electrodes, Ce, and the capacitance of the metal holder, Ch.

Co = Ce + Ch

Shunt capacitance is typically specified as a maximum value in picofarads, pF. Co has an affect on the motional capacitance which determines the "pullability" of a crystal. Design and manufacturing practices generally work to minimize Co.
